This chronology is incomplete. Over four decades, some important research sources have unfortunately been lost. The principal source for our detailed content has been theatrical programs. Although we believe that we have mainstage productions in correct chronological order, programs for some productions could not be located; thus, some details cannot be included here. However, all of our “missing” productions are noted in the chronology. There, an explanation similar to the one below is offered:

“Information about this play’s performances is based upon advance marketing and advertising material, including newspaper and magazine articles in our archives. Unfortunately, a program for this production, our primary source of data, could not be located.”

Also, we sometimes have the personnel data but no production photographs, or vice-versa. We invite visitors to contact us and help us “fill in the blanks” if they can.

Another reason we are incomplete is that we have been selective. Presently, the chronology includes only History Theatre’s mainstage productions. In addition, History Theatre, recognizing its place in our community, has had many production arms. Some reached attendees outside our normal, metro-area audience base, and some are no longer part of the organization. This includes summertime “Great Northern Repertory Theatre” productions, school shows, one-performance commemorative event shows, etc.

Moreover, with regard to data accuracy, we have generally deferred to our printed programs when it comes to the spelling of any show’s character or actor names or any other information. We extend our apologies and hope that offended parties will contact us about corrections.

Our research sources have included past-season programs held in our archives, the Gale Library at the Minnesota Historical Society (MHS) and programs donated by interested audience members. We have also studied magazine and newspaper articles, critiques and our own marketing and advertising materials for data about each of our productions. Needless to say, we are extremely grateful to all who have contributed information to the reconstruction of History Theatre’s legacy. Please see the Acknowledgements page for a partial listing of contributors.

Visitors are strongly encouraged to contact the webmaster via email to offer verifiable contributions to data about any production. The email address is wayne531@comcast.net.
